Charles Lamb was around six years old when he saw such theatrical performances as Artaxerxes, a 1792 English opera with music by Thomas Arne; Harlequin's Invasion (1759) by David Garrick; Way of the World by William Congreve (1700); and Robinson Crusoe, based on the 1719 book by Daniel Defoe.
Lamb, after half-dozen or so years, again attended a theatre performance. In this essay he compares and contrasts his experiences and his interpretation of attending theatrical plays as a child and as a boy entering adolescence.
