DESCRIPTION
Studies suggest that not exercising is risky behavior. National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health, wrote this book as part of their mandate to conduct research aimed at improving the health of older people.
The first three chapters of this book explain what exercise and physical activity can do, how to exercise safely, and how to stay motivated to exercise. Chapter 4 is a "how-to" chapter. It shows how to exercise to improve or maintain endurance, strength, balance, and flexibility. Chapter 5 also is a "how-to" chapter, giving examples of ways people can check their progress. The last chapter is about nutrition.
Each chapter summary lists important points to remember.
The end of the book provides resources to contact for more information about exercise and special programs for older exercisers. Some of the resources are for people with diseases or disabilities. Also provided are charts to record progress and a form that can be filled out and sent to the NIA after a person has been exercising for at least a month. The NIA will send that person a NIA certificate that acknowledges their commitment to improving their health through exercise.
