DESCRIPTION
First published in 1841, Poe's short story, "A Descent into the Maelstrom," was inspired by the Moskstraumen, a series of tidal eddies and whirlpools in Norway. Told as a story within a story, the narrator of the tale recounts an experience in which his ship was caught in the vortex of a massive whirlpool; he watched helplessly as he descended towards his death. His narrow escape from being dashed to death on the rocks on the ocean floor displays a classic use of ratiocination.
