DESCRIPTION
Initially published in April 1819 via "New Monthly Magazine," "The Vampyre" is likely the initial incarnation in English fiction of the vampire, or nosferatu - the best known Romanian folklore in which a corpse rises at night to drink the blood of the living. Significantly, though, this story elevates the crude, lowly creature of Romanian legend into a patrician-like villain moving among the upper classes.
