DESCRIPTION
A brilliant lawyer, Elihu Root served as an adviser to President Theodore Roosevelt, as the Secretary of War for President William McKinley, and as a Senator for New York. After a long career in the public service, Root became the president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He was awarded the 1912 Nobel Peace Prize for his life's work. Due to the outbreak of WWI, he was unable to give his Nobel Lecture. This text is from Root's Addresses on International Subjects, which would have been read as his Nobel Lecture.
