    Can You Eat Pizza Left Out Over Night: A Scientific Investigation

    When you have friends over and they’re all finished eating, but there is still a ton of pizza left. What do you do? How long can you keep that leftover pizza before it goes bad? Are 10 minutes better than 20? Is it only good at room temperature instead of cold? If we don’t know something, how can we possibly find out more about it? Lucky for us, science is equipped with ways to answer even the weirdest questions about our world. These answers come from experiments and trials known as Scientific Investigations.

    Can you eat pizza left out overnight?

    Not if you want to avoid food poisoning. As a general rule, you shouldn’t leave any food out of the fridge longer than two hours. The two-hour rule was devised to keep people from getting sick from foods like pizza that have high bacteria counts. The high heat of the oven kills bacteria and makes the pizza safer to eat, but once you take it out of the oven, it starts to cool down. Bacteria like warm and moist environments, so if you leave pizza out for too long, it will start to grow bacteria at an alarming rate. The more bacteria on your pizza, the more likely you are to get sick. Instead of reheating your pizza, consider making a fresh batch.

    Why Does Leftover Pizza Go Bad?

    • The main culprits behind the quick deterioration of leftover pizza are the high moisture content of the crust and the high heat of the oven used for cooking it. The first problem is that when the pizza is in the fridge, the cold air surrounding it will contract, pulling the moisture inside the crust outwards. When this moisture comes into contact with the cold air in your refrigerator, it will form droplets and freeze, creating a crusty layer of ice on the pizza.
    • As time goes on, this ice will grow more and more, effectively dehydrating the pizza and causing the crust to become brittle. This process is known as the freezer-burn effect, and it happens when any food that is high in moisture is frozen and then thawed out. 
    • The second problem is that when pizzas are cooked at high temperatures, they create complex chemical reactions between the sugars and amino acids in the crust, which eventually turn into carcinogenic compounds called Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). These PAHs are known to cause cancer in humans, but the good news is that freezing them will halt the process. Unfortunately, when you take the pizza out of the freezer, it will re-start the PAHs’ progression towards cancer, and the only way to stop it is to cook the pizza again. 
    • The Danger of Storing Cheese

    So what makes this food so different from the others? Well, first of all, cheese is a dairy product, and dairy contains a high amount of fats. This means that it will go bad much quicker than other leftovers. In fact, the more fat a food contains, the quicker it will go bad. The other reason why cheese is so much more perishable than other foods is that it contains live bacteria that help to make it go bad. This bacteria is killed when the cheese is cooked, but when it is kept in the fridge, it continues to live, and this causes it to become smelly and go bad even faster. The biggest problem with keeping cheese in the fridge is that it releases a very pungent smell that is difficult to get rid of. This is why you should wait until your fridge is completely empty before adding any new food. 

    •  Rotting Marinara Sauce

    Most of us like to keep a large jar of pasta sauce in the fridge, especially when we have leftovers to use up. It’s a great idea to cook extra pasta and sauce when you have a lot of guests over, but one drawback of keeping a jar of leftover sauce in the fridge is that its high-sugar content causes it to go bad quickly.

    Unfortunately, if you add your leftover pizza to this sauce, it will only speed up the decomposition process. To avoid this, add a little bit of water to your leftover sauce and stir it well before storing it in the fridge. This will add some moisture to the sauce and extend its lifespan.

    • Rapid Decomposition of Cured Meats

    If you like to keep a big chunk of cheese in your fridge, you may also have some cured meats in there, such as salami, pepperoni, or prosciutto. Unfortunately, these foods are known to go bad very quickly, even when stored in a refrigerator.

    The high amount of fat and salt in cured meats causes them to spoil quickly, especially when mixed with other foods that are high in fat, such as cheese. Unlike tomato sauce, cured meats also contain live bacteria that will speed up the decomposition process even more. 

    • More Bad News: Expiration Dates Don’t Mean Much

    For most foods, the expiration date is a good indication of when they go bad, but it’s important to remember that manufacturers calculate their dates based on the assumption that the product will be kept at a certain temperature.

    The trouble with this is that each refrigerator has a different temperature setting, so while a product may be fine in one home, it may already be spoiled in another. The good news is that there are ways to extend the lifespan of your leftovers, and you don’t even have to do anything special. As long as your refrigerator stays relatively empty, and you regularly clean the inside, your food will stay fresh for much longer than you might think. 

    How To Find Out If You Can Eat Pizza Left Over From The Night Before?

    • Check the Expiration Date

    You should always check the expiration date before consuming any food item. Make sure that the pizza you are eating is not past its expiry date. The expiry date is indicated on the label of the product. The date is the last date on which an item can be consumed. It is not recommended to consume expired food as it can lead to food poisoning. Food poisoning can occur due to a variety of reasons. However, one of the most common causes of food poisoning is bacteria. Bacteria can also cause food spoilage. Food spoilage is caused due to other factors. Such factors include oxygen, heat, light, and moisture. Moisture is a major cause of food spoilage. It is necessary to check food for signs of spoilage before consuming it.

    • Check for Signs of Mold or Rot

    If the pizza you are going to eat is a day or two old, check for signs of mold or rot. The sooner you identify them, the better. If you find any signs of mold or rot, discard the pizza. Anything that has mold on it is potentially dangerous to eat. If you find that the pizza is slightly green, then you might want to discard it. This can indicate the presence of a common type of mold called Penicillium. However, it is possible that the green color is produced as a result of cooking the pizza in a copper pan. If you find that the pizza is discolored but not moldy, you can probably still eat it. If the top of the pizza is slightly discolored, it has probably been exposed to too much heat.

    • Check the Temperature

    Another important thing to check is the temperature of the pizza. While you are consuming the pizza, check the temperature of the pizza. While the center of the pizza should be warm, it should not be too hot. Otherwise, it indicates that the pizza is either left out or has been in the refrigerator for too long. If the pizza is warm, but not hot, you can safely consume it. Make sure that the pizza is not cold. Cold pizza does not have a good taste or texture. If the pizza is warm but has been left out for too long, it might have been contaminated with bacteria.

    • Look at the Colour

    While you are checking the pizza, look at the color of the crust. If the crust of the pizza is fresh, it will be a golden brown color. If the color of the crust is more golden or slightly burnt, it is probably stale. If the crust is fresh, you can safely consume it. However, the stale crust should not be consumed. The stale crust has lost its taste and is generally not healthy to eat. If you are planning to eat the stale crust, add toppings to make a fresh pizza.

    • Smell It

    While you are checking the pizza, smell it. The pizza should have a nice aroma. If the pizza smells bad, you should discard it. If the pizza smells not bad but just not good, you can try adding toppings to improve the smell and taste.

    How Long Can You Keep Pizza Out?

    If you want to leave it out, the best option is to put it in a container and cover it with a paper towel to keep it moist, but if you really don’t want to keep it in the fridge, you can leave it out for a few hours, but don’t go over 10. 

    • After that, it’s not just that it gets dry and less appetizing, but also it is more likely to grow bacteria.
    •  After 10 hours, the bacteria levels reach a critical point, and the pizza is no longer safe to eat. So the best thing to do is to keep it covered, at a moderate room temperature, around 20 degrees Celsius.
    •  If you can’t keep it covered, then be sure to check it every now and then so that it doesn’t dry out. 
    • You can also put a damp paper towel on top of the pizza, but don’t water it down.

    Could You Freeze Pizza To Save For Later?

    • If you want to save pizza for later, freezing is definitely the better option. 
    • You can keep frozen pizza for up to a year, which is almost twice as long as fresh pizza. 
    • It’ll still taste the same, so if you know you’ve got a busy weekend coming up, you can make a big batch of pizza and freeze it to eat when you don’t have time to make anything else.
    •  If you freeze pizza, make sure you wrap it up in several layers of foil or plastic wrap, and then put it in an airtight container. 
    • This will help prevent freezer burn, which can make your pizza taste dry and stale.

Luckily, you don’t have to live on takeout and delivery boxes alone. You can make pizza at home, and it’ll be healthier, cheaper, and tastier too.
